1) Make sure you’re talking about the same thing
2) Everything or nothing
Even if you do want glitz and glamour and sequins in your décor and your partner does not, that does not mean that either one of you “wins”. There can be a compromise in there somewhere. Maybe you get your glitz in a few areas, but the rest of the house is more simplistic. This is just one more thing to talk about.
3) Design is about emotion
If you want something specific in your home, but your partner disagrees, try to explain how you want the house to feel. Emotions can help him or her understand the reasons why, not just that you want something.
